I can't believe we're at the end of first quarter already. I feel like it was just yesterday I was learning names and planning new projects. These kids have done some excellent work in just the few short 9 weeks. Here's a quick overview of projects getting finished this week. 6TH GRADE 6th graders have been working on additive paper sculptures. They learned all about forms, values, complementary pairs, and asymmetrical balance! They started out uncertain, but once they got going, things really started looking awesome. The kids have got everything under control, I get to walk around and watch the entire class. It's awesome :) Students had to create their form before they could construct their sculpture- we talked a lot about craftsmanship and repetition. 7TH GRADE 5th and 6th periods are super busy with 7th graders! They are finishing up TWO different projects and they're doing an amazing job on both. First, we studied the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and are creating architecture inspired sculptures out of popsicle sticks. The kids are always so creative when it comes to their sculptures. They took the idea of a building and ran with it. We'll start painting them tomorrow with a monochromatic color scheme. I was a little nervous about the hot glue guns at first, but I'm proud to say these kids were SO responsible with them! Unfortunately, the art room is limited in hot glue guns as well as electrical outlets. So, in addition to gluing their sculptures, students are practicing making the colors of the color wheel and their values. This allows half the class to glue, half the class to paint every day. Ask them about tints, tones, and shades! They probably wont be able to finish all 12 colors, but they've got a good start on them. This assignment is excellent practice for their sculptures as well as for any future art class. 8TH GRADE We're finishing up our clay vases in 8th grade. They were successfully fired yesterday and starting today students will be able to glaze them. They did a great job building them strong and sturdy, as well as unique. I'm looking forward to seeing them all colored!
